As an Independent artist of the DJ persuasion, I can attest to the importance of media visibility. It is how I get jobs and prove to talent brokers who may not be familiar with what I do, that I'm recognized as a taste-maker and a topic expert and as such they should pay what I'm worth. For me, it's super important that I get good publicity, and have a good reputation because that is how I get booked.
5 Tips that Effectively and/or Independently Manage Your Publicity:
Do the research
Research the places and people you send your art to. Make sure your music matches the station/show's format. Internet radio may not require clean music. Terrestrial radio stations usually are FCC compliant and need clean music. Depending on where you send them and who you send them to, there are different requirements and preferences that would increase the likelihood of air play. Do yourself a favor and do the research.
Fish where the fish are
College, internet, community and public radio stations are most likely to play your music and do interviews. Corporate stations require more things in order to put you on their station so you will have more success submitting to said media outlets.
